THE A. B. YOUNG TRAIL was reconstructed in the 1930’s by the Civilian Conservation Corp which was supervised by AB Young. However, the trail was first established by C.S. Bear in the 1880’s.
This trail is very strenuous. It is very steep and horses are not recommended. It is open year round, and will take about 3-4 hours to hike one way. We show the tail as being 1.92 miles in length, but the Forest Service shows that it is 2.4 miles. (Our distance is based on straight line between GPS points and is not as accurate as a ground measurement). You will have to cross the creek near the southern most end of Bootlegger Campground. An old metal sign marks the start of the trail. The trail starts with a moderately steep climb entering the wilderness area. The trail will climb 1600 feet as it switchbacks up to the rim of Oak Creek Canyon. From there you will head west to t he East Pocket Fire Lookout Tower.
